A glittering stars mobile adds a touch of fantasy to a formal outdoor dinner party. Pale colours are used for after dark — or try sunny, warm colours for a daytime party.

Materials

• (For a 6-place setting)
• Squared pattern paper
• Pale green or white cotton for a tablecloth Medium-weight card Clear, quick-drying adhesive
• Silver glitter dust
• Silver cord

Preparation

1 Work out the size of your table-cloth from the chart. Cut the fabric to size, joining pieces as required. Join pieces with run-and-fell seams, so that the cloth is neat on both sides.

2 Finish the cloth edges either with a narrow machine-stitched hem or with a single zigzag-stitched hem. Alternatively, you can stitch matching satin ribbon round a square or rectangular cloth.

3 Trace the stars and shooting stars patterns. Transfer the motifs to the card and cut out. You will need 2 shapes for each star.

Working the design

4 Stars Stick 2 stars or 2 shooting stars together with a length of silver cord between them. Leave to dry then spread adhesive thinly on one side. Sprinkle thickly with glitter dust. Leave to dry.

5 Spread adhesive on the other side, sprinkle with glitter dust. Hang the decorations to dry. (They can be tied to a coat hanger.)

6 Tie the ribbon ends to a lampshade ring. Tie 3 hanging ribbons to the lampshade ring and suspend the mobile over the table.

Finishing and assembly

7 Spread the cloth on the table. Fold the napkins decoratively. Place on the setting plate. For the table centre, arrange twisted candles — silver, green and white — of different heights in clear glass holders. If you like, the candles can be surrounded with fresh, white flowers.

8 Hang the glittery stars and moons over the table. Tie back bushes and shrubs, if necessary, with crinkle paper ribbon.

Party stars

Laminate plain, striped and spotted giftwrap papers to card. Cut plain and patterned stars, stick two together over coloured threads.
