Because of the versatility of patchwork, a cushion is usually one of the first projects tackled by a patchwork novice.

This cushion is the ideal project because straight seams are used throughout and a cottage is always a popular theme.

Materials

Maroon fabric for roof of cottage: 20 cm

Dark-blue fabric for walls of cottage: 20 cm Off-white fabric for window, door and background:

Off-white fabric for borders: to cm

Light-brown fabric for borders: to cm Dark-brown fabric for borders: to cm Light-blue fabric for borders: to cm Medium-blue fabric for borders: to cm Dark-blue fabric for borders: to cm

Off-white fabric for lining and back: 45 cm Batting: 45 cm

Method

COTTAGE

Note: All seam allowances are o,6 cm.

• Trace all the sections of the cottage onto the right side of the fabrics and cut out very accurately.
• Start with the lower part of the cottage and stitch the sections together to form four strips.
• Press the strips.
• Stitch the four strips together.
• Press the block carefully first on the wrong and then on the right side. All sides of the cottage block are the same length.

BORDER STRIPS

• Cut out the strips as follows: Off-white: 17 cm x 5 cm and 20,5 cm x 5 cm
• Light-brown: 24 cm x 5 cm and 28 cm x 5 cm Dark-brown: 32 cm x 5 cm and 36 cm x 5 cm Light-blue: 20,5 cm x 5 cm and 24 cm x 5 cm Medium-blue: 28 cm x 5 cm and 32 cm x 5 cm Dark-blue: 36 cm x 5 cm and 4o cm x 5 cm

• Start with the short off-white strip on the one edge of the cottage and stitch on. Stitch on the rest of the strips, moving to the right as you go. Use the shortest strip of each colour first throughout.

FINISHING OFF

• Press the completed block.
• Cut two 45 cm x 45 cm off-white squares for the lining and the back and one out of the batting.
• Baste the top and the lining together wrong sides facing and the batting in between.
• Quilt 0,5 cm from all the stitching lines or only along the stitching lines if you are short of time. The quilting may also be left out.
• Place the front and the back right sides facing and stitch right round, leaving an opening of to cm in the centre of one of the sides.
• Turn the cushion cover right side out, stuff firmly and close the opening.
