TROMPE L’OEIL DRAWERS

A really fun way to decorate a set of drawers is to disguise them as an alternative storage space, such as stacked shelves. Having found some pictures in a magazine of towels, cushions and fabrics piled high, I cut them out and glued them onto the drawers.

1 Remove the drawers from the surrounding unit and then paint the surround with the pale blue emulsion paint. Apply two to three coats for a smooth and even finish. Allow to dry between each coat, and again when finished.
YOU WILL NEED
- Unit with wooden drawers
- Emulsion paints (pale blue, various other colours to match the images)
- Paintbrushes
- Images taken from magazines
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Scissors
- PVA glue
- Gloss varnish
- Screw-in knobs
VARIATIONS
Instead of having a different design of decoupage on each drawer, take colour photocopies of your particular favourite and stick the same picture on each drawer to represent a much larger area of storage.
2 Select pictures from magazines: home interest magazines are the best bet for the type of images that have been chosen here. Measure the drawer fronts, then transfer those measurements to the back of the images using the ruler and pencil and cut out.
3 Paint the edges of each drawer to match the colours on the picture you have chosen to stick to that
Particular drawer. To finish off each drawer particularly neatly, you might choose to paint inside the drawers as well as outside.
4 Stick down each picture onto the drawer face, wiping over the surface with a soft cloth to get rid of any air bubbles to ensure a smooth finish.
5 Varnish the decoupaged surfaces with two to three coats for a hard-wearing finish. Let each coat of
Varnish dry before applying the next one. To open each drawer with ease, screw a drawer knob into the centre of each one.
